Advocacy
Our Advocacy Initiatives
The Community Transportation Committee (CTC) engages in multifaceted advocacy campaigns to improve public transit equity, accessibility, and sustainability in Iowa City and the surrounding region. We employ a variety of strategies and tactics to push for positive change.
Transit Riders' Voice
At the core of our advocacy is amplifying the voices and lived experiences of bus riders themselves. Through surveys, town halls, and other outreach, we gather data and personal stories that illuminate the need for better transit services. Riders' perspectives directly inform our policy platforms.
Public Awareness
Raising public awareness about the importance of reliable transit is key to building support for improvements. Our advocacy includes tactics like community canvassing, stakeholder presentations, media outreach, op-eds, and social media campaigns to educate and shift the narrative.
Coalition Building
We actively build coalitions with allied nonprofit organizations, major employers, neighborhood associations, student groups, disability rights advocates and others impacted by inadequate transportation options. Unified voices advocating together create powerful momentum.
Research & Policy
Our advocacy is grounded in substantive research and data analysis examining Iowa City's transit services, accessibility gaps, funding sources, peer city case studies and more. We develop and promote concrete policy proposals backed by credible evidence.
Government Relations
Consistent engagement with city council members, transit agency leadership, government staff and elected officials at all levels is vital. We provide public comments, technical advisory input, budgetary recommendations and more to influence decision-making processes.
Grassroots Mobilizing
From petition drives to community meetings and educational events, we organize grassroots supporters to take action. This includes facilitating pathways for transit riders to share their stories publicly and embrace their power as constituents and voters.
Legal Strategies
In some cases, advocacy requires exploring legal avenues to protect transit riders' rights and uphold accessibility obligations under disability rights laws, environmental justice provisions, and other statutes and regulations.
CTC's advocacy is comprehensive, data-driven and fundamentally rooted in the belief that equitable mobility is a human rights issue. We combine strategic initiatives with relentless community organizing to create better public transit solutions for all Iowa City residents.
