Why Transportation?

Picture
Transportation and Employment

Expanding affordable and inclusive transportation options benefits workers by increasing job opportunities, promoting self-sufficiency, and extending pathways for career advancement. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless Employment Report, 30% of survey respondents reported that transportation was a barrier to employment (Acuña and Erlenbusch, 2009).

Transportation is essential for finding and maintaining employment. Our research suggests there is a need for affordable transportation options for under served communities in Johnson County. According to our survey, forty percent of respondents reported turning down a job because of poor transportation. Thirty-five percent reported that they had lost a job and thirty percent reported that they gave up looking for a job they wanted due to lack of transportation options. Improving transportation options has many benefits for working households and for the economic prosperity of the region.

Transportation and Housing

Transportation provides a vital link between employment and housing. Improving transportation options to housing that is affordable allows workers to maintain a sustainable livelihood. In addition, home values perform 42 percent better on average if they are located near public transportation with high-frequency service (American Public Transportation Association, 2016).

Help Us Keep Johnson County Moving Forward!

Your donation directly removes transportation barriers that stand between community members and opportunity. With zero overhead and no paid staff, 100% of your contribution goes straight to bus passes and transit fares for people who need them most.

Your Impact

  • $25 provides bus passes for a week of commuting to work
  • $50 helps a student get to school for a month
  • $100 ensures someone can reach medical appointments and essential services
  • $500 supports a worker maintaining employment for several months

Since 2017, donors like you have made it possible for us to distribute over $9,000 in transit assistance—helping people get to jobs, healthcare, education, and essential services.
Every Dollar Counts

When you donate to CTC, you're not just helping one person get a ride—you're:

  • Helping a parent keep their job and provide for their family
  • Enabling a student to complete their education
  • Ensuring someone doesn't have to choose between medical care and groceries
  • Investing in the economic prosperity of our entire community

While Iowa City Transit is currently free, Coralville Transit, the 380 Express, and Johnson County SEATS still charge fees that create real barriers for many residents.
